SCRIPTURE

"But I exhort you, brethren, bear with the word of exhortation, for I have written unto you in few words." — Hebrews 13:22 (ASV)

And I beseech you, etc. Some understand this as if he were soliciting them to hear him; but I take another view. For he mentions, as I think, that he had written in a few words, or briefly, so that he would not appear as if he wished to diminish in any way the ordinary practice of teaching.

From this, let us learn that Scripture has not been given to us to silence the voice of pastors, and that we are not to be overly critical when we often hear the same exhortations. For the Holy Spirit has so regulated the writings He dictated to the Prophets and the Apostles that He takes nothing away from the order He Himself instituted. And the order is that constant exhortations should be heard in the Church from the mouth of pastors.

And he probably recommends the word of exhortation for this reason: although people are by nature eager to learn, they still prefer to hear something new rather than to be reminded of things already known and often heard. Besides, as they indulge in sloth, they can hardly bear to be stimulated and reproved.
