John Calvin Commentary

John Calvin Commentary
"[being] only (with meats and drinks and divers washings) carnal ordinances, imposed until a time of reformation." — Hebrews 9:10 (ASV)
Until the time of reformation, etc. Here he alludes to the prophecy of Jeremiah. (Jeremiah 31:31) The new covenant succeeded the old as a reformation. He expressly mentions meats and drinks, and other things of minor importance, because by these trifling observances a more certain opinion may be formed how far short was the Law of the perfection of the Gospel.
