John Calvin Commentary Isaiah 14:23

"I will also make it a possession for the porcupine, and pools of water: and I will sweep it with the besom of destruction, saith Jehovah of hosts." — Isaiah 14:23 (ASV)

And I will make it to be a possession of the hedgehog. He again confirms the same things which he previously predicted: namely, that from now on it will not be a habitation for humans, but will resemble a hideous cavern where wild beasts will lurk.

קפד (kippod) is rendered by some as a beaver, by some as a tortoise, and by others as a hedgehog. From the context of the passage, it is probable that the Prophet spoke of an animal found near water, because he later mentions pools of water. This applies strictly to the situation of the place, for although Babylon did not lie in a marsh, it lay in a moist area, the country around it being watered on one side by the Euphrates and on the other by the Tigris. Therefore, the Lord threatens to bring a deluge upon it.
