"Therefore thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will send thee away from off the face of the earth: this year thou shalt die, because thou hast spoken rebellion against Jehovah." — Jeremiah 28:16 (ASV)
Here, the punishment is added that confirmed the prophecy of Jeremiah. For it was God’s purpose to take into account the ignorance of many who otherwise would have stumbled, or made their ignorance a pretext, because they could not determine which of the two, Hananiah or Jeremiah, had been sent by God.
It was then God’s design, in His paternal kindness, to extend His hand to them and also, in a special way, to make inexcusable the unbelieving who had already, so to speak, given themselves up to the devil. For most of them were not moved by an event so memorable, for it follows immediately—
