John Calvin Commentary John 10:23

"it was winter; and Jesus was walking in the temple in Solomon`s porch." — John 10:23 (ASV)

And Jesus was walking in the temple, in Solomon’s porch. The Evangelist designates Solomon’s porch as the temple; not that it was the sanctuary, but only an appendage to the temple.

Nor does he mean the ancient porch built by Solomon, which had been completely destroyed by the Chaldeans. Rather, he refers to the one that the Jews—perhaps immediately after their return from the Babylonian captivity—built following the pattern of the ancient porch, and they gave it the same name so that it might be more highly honored; Herod later built a new temple.
