John Calvin Commentary

John Calvin Commentary
"Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt understand hereafter." — John 13:7 (ASV)
What I do. We are taught by these words that we should simply obey Christ, even though we may not understand the reason why he desires this or that thing to be done. In a well-regulated house, one person, the head of the family, has the sole right to say what should be done, and the servants are bound to use their hands and feet in his service. Therefore, that person is too proud who refuses to obey God's command because they do not know the reason for it.
But this admonition has an even more extensive meaning: we should not resent being ignorant of those things God desires to keep hidden from us for a time. For this kind of ignorance is more learned than any other kind of knowledge when we allow God to be wiser than us.
