John Calvin Commentary

John Calvin Commentary
"If ye love me, ye will keep my commandments." — John 14:15 (ASV)
If you love me. The love with which the disciples loved Christ was true and sincere, and yet some superstition was mixed with it, as is often the case with us; for it was very foolish of them to wish to keep him in the world. To correct this fault, he instructs them to direct their love to another purpose: to devote themselves to keeping the commandments he had given them.
This is undoubtedly a useful doctrine, for among those who think that they love Christ, there are very few who honor him as they should; but, on the contrary, after performing small and trivial services, they give themselves no further concern. The true love of Christ, on the other hand, is regulated by the observance of his doctrine as the only rule. But we are also reminded how sinful our affections are, since even the love we have for Christ is not without fault if it is not directed to pure obedience.
