John Calvin Commentary John 2:7

"Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim." — John 2:7 (ASV)

Fill the water-pots with water. The servants might have been inclined to view this command as absurd, for they already had more than enough water. But in this way the Lord often acts toward us, so that His power may be more gloriously displayed by an unexpected result; although this circumstance is added to emphasize the miracle, for when the servants drew wine out of vessels which had been filled with water, no suspicion can remain.
