SCRIPTURE

"Yea and if I judge, my judgment is true; for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me." — John 8:16 (ASV)

And if I judge, He adds this correction, so that he might not appear entirely to surrender his right. If I judge, he says, my judgment is true; that is, it is entitled to authority. This authority arises from the fact that he does nothing except according to the commandment of the Father.

For I am not alone. This phrase affirms that he is not one of ordinary men, but that he must be considered in connection with the office assigned to him by the Father. But why does he not rather make an open assertion of his Divinity, as he truly and justly could have done? The reason is that, since his Divinity was concealed under the veil of the flesh, he points to his Father, in whom it was more evident. Still, the point of his discourse is to show that all that he does and teaches should be regarded as Divine.
