John Calvin Commentary

John Calvin Commentary
"Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination." — Leviticus 18:22 (ASV)
We learn from these passages that the people were prohibited not only from adultery but also from all sins61 that are contrary to the modesty of nature itself. To make all impurity even more detestable, He enumerates two species of unnatural lust. From this, it is evident that when people indulge themselves in this way, they are carried away by an impulse more than animalistic, defiling themselves with shameful wickedness.
Animals are satisfied with natural relations. It is therefore a gross offense that this distinction should be disregarded by humans, who are gifted with reason. For what is the use of our judgment and intelligent abilities if not to ensure that greater self-restraint exists in us than in brute animals? Therefore, it is plain that those who so shamefully defile themselves must be horribly blinded, as Paul says (Romans 1:28).
However, the madness of lust has invented several monstrous vices. It would be better to bury their names, if God had not chosen for these shameful monuments to exist to inspire us with fear and horror. It has finally advanced to such excesses that people created in God’s image, both male and female, have had relations with animals.
