John Calvin Commentary

John Calvin Commentary
"Nevertheless the cities of the Levites, the houses of the cities of their possession, may the Levites redeem at any time." — Leviticus 25:32 (ASV)
Notwithstanding the cities of the Levites. This is another exception: the Levites were to recover the houses they had sold, either by the right of redemption or freely in the year of jubilee. And this is not only appointed as a favor to them, but also because it concerned the whole people that they should be posted like sentries in the place God had assigned to them.
As for the suburbs, or the lands destined for the support of their cattle, God forbids their transfer. This is because, by doing so, they would have abandoned their proper station and moved elsewhere; and it was important to the whole people that such a dispersion should not occur.
