John Calvin Commentary

John Calvin Commentary
"And when he was come out from thence, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press upon [him] vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of many things;" — Luke 11:53 (ASV)
And while he was saying these things to them. I have previously mentioned that the previous sentences were not inserted by Luke in their proper place. For while Luke was recounting that Christ at a dinner rebuked the scribes, he also introduced the final discourses by which, a little before His death, Christ rebuked their wicked ways; similarly, the rebuke we have just examined is inserted by Luke in connection with a different narrative.
If anyone prefers the opinion of those who suggest that Christ repeated the same discourses on different occasions, I have no strong objection. After delivering the curses which have now been explained, Luke concludes by saying that all the scribes became more hostile towards Christ, so that they did not cease to entrap Him with ensnaring questions; which should be referred to the conversation that took place at the table, rather than to His final discourse.
But I have not considered it very important to be very precise about the time—a matter the Evangelist also disregarded.
