"And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began to say unto him every one, Is it I, Lord?" — Matthew 26:22 (ASV)
They began every one of them to say to him. I do not think that the disciples were alarmed, as people struck with terror are accustomed to become uneasy for no reason; but, abhorring the crime, they desire to clear themselves from the suspicion of it. It is indeed a mark of reverence that when indirectly blamed, they do not reply angrily to their Master, but each person judges himself (as their primary goal should be to be acquitted by their Master's own words), but, relying on a good conscience, they wish to declare frankly how far they are from contemplating such a crime.
