SCRIPTURE

"Howbeit ye did well that ye had fellowship with my affliction." — Philippians 4:14 (ASV)

Nevertheless you did well (Philippians 4:14). How prudently and cautiously he acts, looking around carefully in both directions, that he may not lean too much to one side or to the other. By proclaiming his steadfastness in magnificent terms, he intended to prevent the Philippians from supposing that he had given way under the pressure of need.

He now takes care that, from his speaking in high terms, it might not appear as though he despised their kindness—a thing that would not merely show cruelty and obstinacy, but also haughtiness. At the same time, he also ensures that if any other of Christ's servants should need their assistance, they may not be slow to help him.
