John Calvin Commentary

John Calvin Commentary
"He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house: He that speaketh falsehood shall not be established before mine eyes." — Psalms 101:7 (ASV)
He who works deceit shall not dwell in the midst of my house. This verse may be applied to all magistrates responsible for administering public justice, as well as to household servants. However, since David has just spoken generally about all officers, he now seems to speak specifically about those who are close to the king.
When the chief counselors of kings and other intimate acquaintances who have gained their ear are deceitful and crafty, this becomes the source of all corruptions; for by their example, they encourage others in evil, lifting up, as it were, the banner of licentiousness. And it is impossible for someone who does not maintain good order in his own household to be a fit person to govern an entire realm. The authority which cannot preserve its influence within the home is of little value in state affairs.
