John Calvin Commentary

John Calvin Commentary
"The trees of Jehovah are filled [with moisture], The cedars of Lebanon, which he hath planted;" — Psalms 104:16 (ASV)
The trees of Jehovah shall be satiated. The Psalmist again discusses God’s general providence in caring for all parts of the world.
First, he asserts that by the watering he had mentioned, the trees are satiated, or filled with sap, so that, flourishing in this way, they may be a dwelling place for the birds.
Next, he declares that the wild deer and conies also have their places of shelter, to show that no part of the world is forgotten by Him, who is the best of fathers, and that no creature is excluded from His care.
The transition the prophet makes from humans to trees is as if he had said: It is not surprising if God so bountifully nourishes humans, who are created in His own image, since He willingly extends His care even to trees.
By the trees of the Lord, he means those that are high and of surpassing beauty, because God’s blessing is more conspicuous in them. It hardly seems possible for any sap from the earth to reach such a great height, and yet they renew their foliage every year.
