John Calvin Commentary

John Calvin Commentary
"Let sinners be consumed out of the earth. And let the wicked be no more. Bless Jehovah, O my soul. Praise ye Jehovah." — Psalms 104:35 (ASV)
The imprecation, Let sinners perish from the earth, depends on the last clause of the 31st verse (Psalms 104:31): Let Jehovah rejoice in His works. As the wicked infect the world with their pollutions, the consequence is that God has less delight in His own workmanship and is even almost displeased with it.
This uncleanness, spreading throughout every part of the world, defiling and corrupting such a noble product of His hands, must certainly be offensive to Him. Therefore, since the wicked, by their perverse abuse of God’s gifts, cause the world to degenerate and fall away from its original state, the prophet justly desires that they be exterminated, until they entirely perish.
Let us, therefore, take care to consider God’s providence so that, being wholly devoted to obeying Him, we may rightly and purely use the benefits He sanctifies for our enjoyment.
Furthermore, let us be grieved that such precious treasures are wickedly squandered. Let us also regard it as monstrous and detestable that people not only forget their Maker but also, as it were, purposely turn whatever good things He has bestowed upon them to a perverse and unworthy end.
