John Calvin Commentary

John Calvin Commentary
"Deliver me, O Jehovah, from mine enemies: I flee unto thee to hide me." — Psalms 143:9 (ASV)
Deliver me, O Jehovah! from my enemies. This prayer conveys the same meaning, for his enemies were so intent on his destruction that they left him no way of escape.
Some interpret the verb כסיתי (chisithi) as to hope; however, its proper meaning is to cover, and I am reluctant to depart from this. The explanation some offer is that David, upon perceiving the imminent danger he faced, took refuge in the shelter of God’s shadow and concealed himself under His protection.
This seems a very natural interpretation; at least, I prefer it to another that some have found ingenious—namely, that David, instead of seeking help from various sources, was content for God to be aware of his situation and called upon Him secretly and privately.
