"Jehovah will give strength unto his people; Jehovah will bless his people with peace." — Psalms 29:11 (ASV)

Jehovah will give strength to his people. He returns to his previous teaching, specifically, that although God displays His visible power indiscriminately to the whole world, He nevertheless exerts it in a unique way for His elect people. Moreover, he here describes Him very differently than he did previously; that is, not as one who overwhelms with fear and dread those to whom He speaks, but as one who upholds, cherishes, and strengthens them.

The word strength is understood as the entire human condition. Therefore, he suggests that everything necessary for preserving the lives of the godly depends entirely on the grace of God. He amplifies this with the word bless; for God is said to bless with peace those whom He treats generously and kindly, so that nothing is lacking for their lives to prosper and for their complete happiness.

From this we learn that we should stand in awe of God’s majesty, while still hoping from Him for everything necessary for our prosperity. Let us be firmly convinced that since His power is infinite, we are defended by an invincible fortress.
