SCRIPTURE

"In God have we made our boast all the day long, And we will give thanks unto thy name for ever. Selah" — Psalms 44:8 (ASV)

In God we will boast all the day. This is the conclusion of the first part of the psalm. To express the meaning in a few words, they acknowledge that in all ages the goodness of God had been so great towards the descendants of Abraham that it provided them with continual reason for thanksgiving.

As if the event were still present to their sight, they acknowledge that they ought to give praise to God without ceasing, because they had flourished and triumphed, not merely for one age or a short period, but because they had continued to do so successively from age to age; for they ascribe whatever prosperity had come to them to the grace of God.

And certainly, it is then that people experience a holy and well-regulated joy from the prosperity that comes to them, when this joy bursts forth in the praises of God.

Let us then bear in mind:

  1. That this verse relates to the time of joy and prosperity in which God showed His favor to His people.
  2. That the faithful here show they are not ungrateful, since, having laid aside all vain boasting, they confess that all the victories by which they had become great and renowned proceeded from God, and that it was by His power alone that they had until then continued to exist and had been preserved in safety.
  3. And that it was not only once or twice that reason for joy had been given them, but that this existed for a long time, since God had shown towards them, during a long and uninterrupted period, various proofs and signs of His paternal favor, so that the continuance and (so to speak) the long experience they had had of it, should have served to confirm their hope.
