"Who said, Let us take to ourselves in possession The habitations of God." — Psalms 83:12 (ASV)

Who have said, Let us take in possession for ourselves the habitations of God. These pagan enemies are again accused of treason against the King of heaven, in seizing His heritage like lawless robbers. They would not, we may be sure, declare openly that it was their intention to commit such a crime; but as they despised God, who, as they well knew, was worshipped by the people of Israel, they are here justly charged with the guilt of attempting to dispossess Him of His own inheritance.

And, undoubtedly, they profanely poured abuse upon the true God, for whose sacred majesty they held the greatest contempt, their minds being deluded by their own fabrications. But even if they abstained from gross blasphemies, yet whatever harassing actions are carried out against the godly bring dishonor to God, who has taken them under His protection.

The designation, the habitations or mansions of God, which is applied to Judea, is a form of expression offering significant comfort. God has united Himself to us, intending to have an everlasting residence among us, or rather, so that He may value His Church as highly, and consider it as precious, as a property owner does his most valuable possessions that yield him a large income.
