John Calvin Commentary

John Calvin Commentary
"But Jehovah hath been my high tower, And my God the rock of my refuge." — Psalms 94:22 (ASV)
But Jehovah has been my fortress. The Psalmist declares that, however great the extremities to which he had been reduced, he had found sufficient help in God's protection alone, thus offering a new commendation of His power, which, by itself and unaided, was able to subdue the mightiest efforts—all the force and fury of his numerous enemies.
He does more than say that God was a fortress where he could hide safely and from whose top he could defy every assault. Having celebrated the divine protection he received, he proceeds to declare destruction upon his enemies, for it should be considered God’s special prerogative to make the evil His enemies devise against His people recoil upon their own heads.
The mere defeating and frustrating of their attempts would provide a significant display of divine justice; but the judgment of God is far more marvelously manifested when they fall into the pit they themselves had prepared, when all the subtle plans they have adopted to ruin the innocent result in their own destruction through their own craftiness, and when, having done their utmost, they fall by their own sword.
We are slow to believe that this will be the outcome, and so it is said twice—he shall cut them off; the Lord our God shall cut them off. It may also be noticed that the Psalmist, in using the expression our God, offers a source of encouragement to the faithful, reminding us of what he had said earlier: that God will not forget His own inheritance, namely, His people whom He has brought to faith in Himself.
