John Calvin Commentary

John Calvin Commentary
"For if because of meat thy brother is grieved, thou walkest no longer in love. Destroy not with thy meat him for whom Christ died." — Romans 14:15 (ASV)
But if through meat your brother is grieved, etc. He now explains how offending our brothers can corrupt the use of good things. And the first reason is that love is violated when our brother is made to grieve by something so trivial, for it is contrary to love to cause grief to anyone.
The second reason is that when a weak conscience is wounded, the price of Christ’s blood is wasted. For the lowliest brother has been redeemed by the blood of Christ. It is therefore a grievous crime to destroy him by gratifying the stomach. And we must be shamefully enslaved to our own lusts if we prefer meat, a worthless thing, to Christ.
The third reason is that since the liberty attained for us by Christ is a blessing, we ought to take care that it is not spoken of as evil by people and justly blamed, which happens when we use God’s gifts inappropriately.
These reasons, then, should influence us, so that in using our liberty, we do not thoughtlessly cause offenses.
