SCRIPTURE

"whensoever I go unto Spain (for I hope to see you in my journey, and to be brought on my way thitherward by you, if first in some measure I shall have been satisfied with your company)--" — Romans 15:24 (ASV)

For I hope, etc. He refers to the reason why he had long wished to come to them, and now intended to do so — namely, that he might see them, enjoy a meeting and interaction with them, and make himself known to them in his official capacity; for by the coming of the Apostles the gospel also came.

By saying, to be brought on my way there by you, he indicates how much he expected from their kindness; and this, as we have already observed, is the best way of gaining favor. For the more confidence anyone hears is placed in him, the more strongly he feels obligated, since we consider it shameful and discourteous to disappoint the good opinion formed of us. And by adding, When I will first be partly filled, etc., he bears witness to his goodwill towards them; and to convince them of this was very necessary for the advancement of the gospel.
