John Calvin Commentary

John Calvin Commentary
"He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not also with him freely give us all things?" — Romans 8:32 (ASV)
He who has not spared his own son, etc. Since it is of great importance for us to be so thoroughly convinced of God's fatherly love that we are able to continue rejoicing because of it, Paul presents the price of our redemption to prove that God shows favor to us. And undoubtedly, it is a remarkable and clear evidence of immeasurable love that the Father did not refuse to give his Son for our salvation. And so Paul draws an argument from the greater to the less: since God had nothing dearer, more precious, or more excellent than his Son, He will neglect nothing that He foresees will be beneficial for us.
This passage should remind us of what Christ brings to us and awaken us to contemplate his riches. For as Christ is a pledge of God’s infinite love toward us, so he has not been sent to us devoid of blessings or empty, but filled with all heavenly treasures, so that those who possess him will not lack anything necessary for their complete blessedness. To deliver up here means to expose to death.
