SCRIPTURE

"And the king said, Is the hand of Joab with thee in all this? And the woman answered and said, As thy soul liveth, my lord the king, none can turn to the right hand or to the left from aught that my lord the king hath spoken; for thy servant Joab, he bade me, and he put all these words in the mouth of thy handmaid;" — 2 Samuel 14:19 (ASV)

And the king said, [is not] the hand of Joab with you in all
this ?
&c.] That is, is not this done by the advice, assistance, and direction of Joab? did not he form this scheme for you, and direct you to this method, and put you upon prosecuting it?

and the woman answered and said, [as] your soul liveth, my lord the
king ;
what I am about to say is as sure as you are alive; though this may be only a wish that he might long live and be happy; nothing is more desirable than your valuable life:

none can turn to the right hand or the left from ought that my lord the
king has spoken ;
he has hit upon the truth of the matter; there is no dissimulation or prevarication to be used; the thing cannot be denied.

For your servant Joab he bid me, and put all these words in the mouth of your handmaid: he sent for me, and laid his commands on me, and directed me what to say to the king, and how to conduct this affair.
