SCRIPTURE

"And when it was day, they knew not the land: but they perceived a certain bay with a beach, and they took counsel whether they could drive the ship upon it. And casting off the anchors, they left them in the sea, at the same time loosing the bands of the rudders; and hoisting up the foresail to the wind, they made for the beach. But lighting upon a place where two seas met, they ran the vessel aground; and the foreship struck and remained unmoveable, but the stern began to break up by the violence [of the waves]. And the soldiers` counsel was to kill the prisoners, lest any [of them] should swim out, and escape. But the centurion, desiring to save Paul, stayed them from their purpose; and commanded that they who could swim should cast themselves overboard, and get first to the land; and the rest, some on planks, and some on [other] things from the ship. And so it came to pass, that they all escaped safe to the land." — Acts 27:39-44 (ASV)

The ship that had weathered the storm in the open sea, where it had room, is dashed to pieces when it sticks fast. Thus, if the heart becomes fixed on the world in its affections and clings to it, it is lost. Satan's temptations beat against it, and it perishes; but as long as it remains above the world, though tossed by cares and turmoil, there is hope for it. They had the shore in view, yet suffered shipwreck in the harbor; thus we are taught never to be complacent.

Though there is great difficulty in the way of the promised salvation, it will, without fail, come to pass. It will come to pass that whatever the trials and dangers may be, in due time all believers will get safely to heaven. Lord Jesus, you have assured us that none of thine shall perish.

You will bring them all safely to the heavenly shore. And what a pleasing landing will that be! You will present them to your Father and give your Holy Spirit full possession of them forever.
