Matthew Henry Commentary

Matthew Henry Commentary
"It was necessary therefore that the copies of the things in the heavens should be cleansed with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. For Christ entered not into a holy place made with hands, like in pattern to the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear before the face of God for us: nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place year by year with blood not his own; else must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once at the end of the ages hath he been manifested to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. And inasmuch as it is appointed unto men once to die, and after this [cometh] judgment; so Christ also, having been once offered to bear the sins of many, shall appear a second time, apart from sin, to them that wait for him, unto salvation." — Hebrews 9:23-28 (ASV)
It is evident that the sacrifices of Christ are infinitely better than those of the law, which could neither obtain pardon for sin nor grant power against it. Sin would still have been on us and would have had dominion over us. But Jesus Christ, by one sacrifice, has destroyed the works of the devil, so that believers may be made righteous, holy, and happy.
Just as no wisdom, learning, virtue, wealth, or power can keep any human from death, so nothing except the atoning sacrifice of Christ can deliver a sinner from condemnation at the day of judgment. Nor will anyone who despises or neglects this great salvation be saved from eternal punishment.
The believer knows that his Redeemer liveth, and that he shall see him. This is the faith and patience of the church and of all sincere believers. Therefore, their continual prayer, as the fruit and expression of their faith, is: Even so come, Lord Jesus.
