Matthew Henry Commentary

Matthew Henry Commentary
"Let mine enemy be as the wicked, And let him that riseth up against me be as the unrighteous. For what is the hope of the godless, though he get him gain, When God taketh away his soul? Will God hear his cry, When trouble cometh upon him? Will he delight himself in the Almighty, And call upon God at all times?" — Job 27:7-10 (ASV)
Job considered the condition of a hypocrite and a wicked man to be most miserable. If they gained throughout life by their profession, and kept up their presumptuous hope until death, what would that profit them when God required their souls? The more comfort we find in our religion, the more closely we will cling to it. Those who have no delight in God are easily drawn away by the pleasures and easily overcome by the trials of this life (Job 27:11–23).
