Matthew Henry Commentary

Matthew Henry Commentary
"And Jesus said, For judgment came I into this world, that they that see not may see; and that they that see may become blind. Those of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and said unto him, Are we also blind? Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye would have no sin: but now ye say, We see: your sin remaineth." — John 9:39-41 (ASV)
Christ came into the world to give sight to those who were spiritually blind. He came also that those who see might be made blind; and that those who have a high conceit of their own wisdom might be sealed in ignorance.
The preaching of the cross was thought to be folly by those who, through carnal wisdom, did not know God. Nothing fortifies people's corrupt hearts against the convictions of the Word more than the high opinion others have of them, as if everything that gained applause from people must also obtain acceptance with God.
Christ silenced them. But the sin of the self-conceited and self-confident remains; they reject the gospel of grace, and therefore the guilt of their sin remains unpardoned, and the power of their sin remains unbroken.
