Matthew Henry Commentary

Matthew Henry Commentary
"So Jehovah gave unto Israel all the land which he sware to give unto their fathers; and they possessed it, and dwelt therein. And Jehovah gave them rest round about, according to all that he sware unto their fathers: and there stood not a man of all their enemies before them; Jehovah delivered all their enemies into their hand. There failed not aught of any good thing which Jehovah had spoken unto the house of Israel; all came to pass." — Joshua 21:43-45 (ASV)
God promised to give the land of Canaan to the seed of Abraham as a possession, and now they possessed it and dwelled there. And the promise of the heavenly Canaan is just as sure for all God's spiritual Israel; for it is the promise of Him who cannot lie.
No man stood before them. The subsequent prevalence of the Canaanites was the result of Israel's slothfulness and the punishment for their sinful inclination toward the idolatries and abominations of the heathen whom they harboured and indulged.
Not one good thing that the Lord had spoken to the house of Israel failed. In due season all His promises will be fulfilled; then His people will acknowledge that the Lord has exceeded their greatest expectations, made them more than conquerors, and brought them to their desired rest.
