Matthew Henry Commentary

Matthew Henry Commentary
"These are they that were numbered by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who numbered the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho. But among these there was not a man of them that were numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest, who numbered the children of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai. For Jehovah had said of them, They shall surely die in the wilderness. And there was not left a man of them, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun." — Numbers 26:63-65 (ASV)
The execution of the sentence passed on the murmurers (Numbers 14:29) is observable. Not one man who was numbered then was numbered now, except for Caleb and Joshua. Here appeared God's righteousness and His faithfulness to His threats. Especially observe God's truth in fulfilling His promise to Caleb and Joshua.
Death wreaks terrible havoc on the human race and causes surprising changes in families and nations; yet all this is appointed in perfect wisdom, justice, and truth by the Lord Himself. This should stir us up to reflect upon the hateful nature of sin, the cause of all these devastations.
We should renew our repentance, seek forgiveness, value the salvation of Christ, remember how frail we are, prepare for the summons of death, and fill up our days serving our generation according to the will of God.
