Matthew Henry Commentary

Matthew Henry Commentary
"But in mount Zion there shall be those that escape, and it shall be holy; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions. And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble, and they shall burn among them, and devour them; and there shall not be any remaining to the house of Esau; for Jehovah hath spoken it. And they of the South shall possess the mount of Esau, and they of the lowland the Philistines; and they shall possess the field of Ephraim, and the field of Samaria; and Benjamin [shall possess] Gilead. And the captives of this host of the children of Israel, that are [among] the Canaanites, [shall possess] even unto Zarephath; and the captives of Jerusalem, that are in Sepharad, shall possess the cities of the South. And saviours shall come up on mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau; and the kingdom shall be Jehovah`s." — Obadiah 1:17-21 (ASV)
Deliverance and holiness would be at Jerusalem, and the house of Jacob would again occupy their possessions. Much of this prophecy was fulfilled when the Jews returned to their own land. But the salvation and holiness of the gospel, its spread, and the conversion of the Gentiles also seem to be intended—especially the restoration of Israel, the destruction of antichrist, and the prosperous state of the church, to which all the prophets bear witness.
When Christ comes, and not until then, will the kingdom be the Lord's in the full sense of the term. Just as no one who exalts themselves against the Lord will prosper, and all such will be brought down; so no one who waits upon the Lord and puts their trust in him will ever be dismayed.
Blessed be the Divine Saviour and Judge on Mount Zion! His word will be a savour of life unto life to many, while it judges and condemns obstinate unbelievers.
