SCRIPTURE

"For ever, O Jehovah, Thy word is settled in heaven. Thy faithfulness is unto all generations: Thou hast established the earth, and it abideth. They abide this day according to thine ordinances; For all things are thy servants. Unless thy law had been my delight, I should then have perished in mine affliction. I will never forget thy precepts; For with them thou hast quickened me. I am thine, save me; For I have sought thy precepts. The wicked have waited for me, to destroy me; [But] I will consider thy testimonies. MEM. I have seen an end of all perfection; [But] thy commandment is exceeding broad." — Psalms 119:89-96 (ASV)

The settling of God's word in heaven is opposed to the changes and upheavals of the earth. And the commitments of God's covenant are established more firmly than the earth itself. All creatures fulfill the purposes of their creation: shall humanity, which alone is endowed with reason, be the only unprofitable burden of the earth? We can make the Bible a pleasant companion at any time.

But the word, without the grace of God, would not make us alive. Consider the best help for a poor memory: namely, good affections. And though the exact words may be lost, if the meaning remains, that is good. I am yours, not my own, not the world's; save me from sin, save me from ruin. The Lord will keep the person in peace, whose mind is stayed on him.

It is a poor perfection whose end one can see. Such are all things in this world that are considered perfections. The glory of man is but as the flower of the grass. The psalmist had seen the fullness of the word of God, and its sufficiency.

The word of the Lord applies to all situations and to all times. It will lead us away from all confidence in humanity, or in our own wisdom, strength, and righteousness. Thus, we will seek comfort and happiness from Christ alone.
