Matthew Henry Commentary

Matthew Henry Commentary
"To him that smote Egypt in their first-born; For his lovingkindness [endureth] for ever; And brought out Israel from among them; For his lovingkindness [endureth] for ever; With a strong hand, and with an outstretched arm; For his lovingkindness [endureth] for ever: To him that divided the Red Sea in sunder; For his lovingkindness [endureth] for ever; And made Israel to pass through the midst of it; For his lovingkindness [endureth] for ever; But overthrew Pharaoh and his host in the Red Sea; For his lovingkindness [endureth] for ever: To him that led his people through the wilderness; For his lovingkindness [endureth] for ever: To him that smote great kings; For his lovingkindness [endureth] for ever; And slew famous kings; For his lovingkindness [endureth] for ever: Sihon king of the Amorites; For his lovingkindness [endureth] forever; And Og king of Bashan; For his lovingkindness [endureth] for ever; And gave their land for a heritage; For his lovingkindness [endureth] for ever; Even a heritage unto Israel his servant; For his lovingkindness [endureth] for ever:" — Psalms 136:10-22 (ASV)
The great things God did for Israel when he brought them out of Egypt were mercies that endured long for them; and our redemption by Christ, which was prefigured by these acts, endures forever. It is good to reflect on the history of God's favors, and in each instance to observe and acknowledge that his mercy endures forever. He put them in possession of a good land; it was a symbol of the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ.
