Matthew Henry Commentary

Matthew Henry Commentary
"For thou, O Jehovah, art my refuge! Thou hast made the Most High thy habitation; There shall no evil befall thee, Neither shall any plague come nigh thy tent. For he will give his angels charge over thee, To keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, Lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: The young lion and the serpent shalt thou trample under foot. Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble: I will deliver him, and honor him. With long life will I satisfy him, And show him my salvation." — Psalms 91:9-16 (ASV)
Whatever happens, nothing will hurt the believer; though trouble and affliction befall him, it will come, not for his harm, but for his good, even though for the present it is not joyous but grievous. Those who rightly know God will set their love upon Him. They constantly call upon Him by prayer.
His promise is that He will in due time deliver the believer out of trouble, and in the meantime be with him in trouble. The Lord will manage all his worldly concerns and preserve his life on earth, as long as it will be good for him. For encouragement in this, he looks to Jesus.
He will live long enough: until he has done the work he was sent into this world to do and is ready for heaven. Who would wish to live a day longer than God has some work to do, either by him or upon him? A man may die young, yet be satisfied with living.
But a wicked man is not satisfied even with long life. At last, the believer's conflict ends; he is done forever with trouble, sin, and temptation.
