SCRIPTURE

"O generation, see ye the word of Jehovah. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? or a land of thick darkness? wherefore say my people, We are broken loose; we will come no more unto thee? Can a virgin forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number." — Jeremiah 2:31-32 (ASV)

Here, the prophet shows their hard-heartedness from the fact that they are not moved by kindness.

  1. He presents the kindnesses that pertain to sustaining life: See (that is, understand), have I become a wilderness to Israel? Indeed, God is like a city and a fruitful land for you, because He defends you and makes the land productive, as the prophet says: He will come to us as the early and the latter rains (Hosea 6:3).
  2. He speaks of those things that pertain to apparel: Can a virgin forget her ornament? As Isaiah says, He has girded me about with the robe of justice (Isaiah 56:10).
