SCRIPTURE

"And the priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of Jehovah. And it came to pass, when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking all that Jehovah had commanded him to speak unto all the people, that the priests and the prophets and all the people laid hold on him, saying, Thou shalt surely die. Why hast thou prophesied in the name of Jehovah, saying, This house shall be like Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate, without inhabitant? And all the people were gathered unto Jeremiah in the house of Jehovah." — Jeremiah 26:7-9 (ASV)

Here, he speaks of the persecution, making four points about it.

  1. The hearing of the preaching: and the priests heard. They hear your words, and do not do them, because they turn them into a song of their mouth (Ezekiel 33:31).
  2. Their wicked counsel: and when Jeremiah had finished . . . the priests seized him. Let us condemn him to a most shameful death . They have hated him that rebukes in the gate, and abhorred him who speaks perfectly (Amos 5:10).
  3. The evidence of their wickedness: why has he prophesied. It is as if they were saying, “The Lord seems to have spoken falsely when he chose this place.” I hate him, because he does not prophesy good to me, but evil (1 Kings 22:8).
  4. The assembling of the people: and all the people were gathered. As is the ruler of a city, so are its inhabitants . Do not cast yourself against the people, nor bind sin to sin .
