SCRIPTURE

"Thou hast called, as in the day of a solemn assembly, my terrors on every side; And there was none that escaped or remained in the day of Jehovah`s anger: Those that I have dandled and brought up hath mine enemy consumed." — Lamentations 2:22 (ASV)

Here the prophet sets forth the impossibility of escape, making three points on this matter:

  1. The siege is described with the phrase as to a festival, meaning that just as the Jews used to come to solemn festivals, so now, inspired by you, their enemies come to besiege them. I will make a circle round about you, and will cast up a rampart against you, and raise up bulwarks to besiege you (Isaiah 29:3).
  2. The impossibility of escape is shown in the phrase there was none that escaped. I have raised up one from the north, and he shall come from the rising of the sun (Isaiah 41:25).
  3. The destruction of those surrounded is described with the words, those that I brought up, and nourished, my enemy has consumed them. I nourished them with joy .
