SCRIPTURE

"O Lord, thou hast pleaded the causes of my soul; thou hast redeemed my life. O Jehovah, thou hast seen my wrong; judge thou my cause. Thou hast seen all their vengeance and all their devices against me." — Lamentations 3:58-60 (ASV)

Here he commends justice to the judge: you have judged, in past times; do so also now. Judge me, O God, and distinguish my cause (Psalms 42:1).

You have seen. Here, having captured the goodwill of the judge, he sets forth his accusation against his enemy.

  1. He denounces the iniquity of their works: you have seen, O LORD, as if to say, “They cannot deny what is known to you.” Above: let all their evil be present before you: and make vintage of them, as you have made vintage of me (Lamentations 1:22).
  2. He denounces the fury of their hearts: you have seen all their fury. Come, and let us invent devices against Jeremiah (Jeremiah 18:18).
  3. He denounces the sin of their mouths: you have heard their reproach (Lamentations 3:61).
