SCRIPTURE

"Jehovah hath accomplished his wrath, he hath poured out his fierce anger; And he hath kindled a fire in Zion, which hath devoured the foundations thereof." — Lamentations 4:11 (ASV)

Here the prophet weeps over the captivity and destruction of the city.

In this passage, he addresses three points:

  1. First, he presents the destruction.
  2. Second, he describes the astonishment at this event: the kings of the earth would not have believed (Lamentations 4:12).
  3. Third, he gives the reason for the destruction: for the sins of her prophets (Lamentations 4:13).

The phrase The Lord has accomplished refers to Him bringing punishment. The words he has poured out signify the abundance of His wrath. The phrase he has kindled a fire describes the type of punishment, because the city was burned. The mention of the foundations is either a specific detail used as an example or is stated because the houses were destroyed down to their very foundations. As Scripture says, A fire is kindled in my wrath, and shall burn even to the lowest hell (Deuteronomy 32:22).
