Thomas Aquinas Commentary

Thomas Aquinas Commentary
"The kings of the earth believed not, neither all the inhabitants of the world, That the adversary and the enemy would enter into the gates of Jerusalem." — Lamentations 4:12 (ASV)
Here he shows that the event was astonishing because it would have previously been unbelievable. Kings and inhabitants would not have believed it, because powerful kings and ramparts with divine protection were in the city, the adversary was openly violent, and the enemy was deceitfully hidden. Who has taken this counsel against Tyre, that was formerly crowned? (Isaiah 23:8). Its destruction shall come suddenly, when it is not expected (Isaiah 30:13).
