Verse 1

He came in the hush of the silent night, For his soul had no rest within; And he heard from the lips of the holy one, Thou must be born again.

Thou must be born again, poor soul, Thy heart must be cleansed from sin; Thy will must bow, And, with sweet control, Thy Lord must reign within.

He came, for he knew that his only hope Must be staid on the truth he heard; And he knew that the voice in his heart that rang Had come from Christ the Lord.

He came, for he longed for the peace that flows From the joy of a purer life; And he longed for a heart that was free from sin, No more with God at strife.
