The Still Small Voice

Thomas O. Chisholm • English

Primary Scripture: Hebrews 3:15

Verse 1

I heard a Voice, a “still small Voice,” When life was new and skies were bright; It spoke to me of destiny, Of duty and of right. Then other voices filled my ear, And charmed my soul away: Alas for me! I failed to heed God’s gently voice that day.

Chorus

That patient Voice, then tender Voice, In ev’ry bosom pleads; It is the Father’s voice of love, His voice of love, And blest is he that heeds.

Verse 2

Again I heard that Heav’nly Voice When sorrow came, with all her train; Dark shadows fell where light had been, And life was full of pain. Above the tumult in my breast, I heard that pleading Voice; It spoke of pardon, peace and rest, And made my heart rejoice.

Chorus

That patient Voice, then tender Voice, In ev’ry bosom pleads; It is the Father’s voice of love, His voice of love, And blest is he that heeds.

Verse 3

And now that Voice is sweeter far Than e’en the sweetest melody; It tells me of my Father’s love, It cheers and comforts me; It whispers how my feet should go Along this earthly road; It calls me on to holiness, To Heaven and to God.

Chorus

That patient Voice, then tender Voice, In ev’ry bosom pleads; It is the Father’s voice of love, His voice of love, And blest is he that heeds.

Verse 4

Ye souls that wander far from God, With heavy hearts and weary feet, Upon the desert ways of sin, Where rain and tempest beat;– That Heav’nly Voice is calling you, O listen, while ye may! No longer harden ye your hearts, But harken and obey.

Chorus

That patient Voice, then tender Voice, In ev’ry bosom pleads; It is the Father’s voice of love, His voice of love, And blest is he that heeds.
