Commentators point out a significant connection to the New Testament in this verse. The eighth priestly division, 'Abijah,' is the same one mentioned in Luke 1:5 as 'Abia.' This was the division of Zacharias, the father of John the Baptist, who was serving in the temple when the angel Gabriel appeared to him. This list, therefore, directly sets the stage for the events of the Gospels.
