Commentators explain that the temple porters were stationed on all four sides—east, west, north, and south. This was a deliberate, organized system for comprehensive watchfulness. One ancient Jewish source, the Targum, even specifies that there were twenty-four guard posts in total, with six assigned to each of the four directions.
