Scholars across the board note a clear scribal error in this verse. Ahaziah's age is given as 42, but his father Jehoram died at age 40, making this impossible. The parallel account in 2 Kings 8:26, as well as ancient Syriac and Arabic versions, correctly state his age as 22. This is a well-established case of a copyist's mistake in transcribing numbers.
