Commentators stress that the command to "believe" (v. 31) was not a magic formula. It required substance. Paul and Silas immediately explained the content of the gospel—who Jesus is, His life, death, resurrection, and the forgiveness He offers. As one scholar puts it, even the jailer had to be a learner before he was baptized, showing that true saving faith is informed and understands the object of its trust.
