The 'Unto Me' Principle

Commentators agree that God's question expects the answer, "No." The issue wasn't a complete lack of sacrifices, but that they were not offered exclusively "unto Me." As Albert Barnes explains, if God is not served wholly and alone, He is not served at all. Worship mixed with idolatry or self-interest is rejected by God because it is directed at a god of one's own imagination, not the one true God.
