Forces shall stand on his part, and they shall profane the sanctuary, even the fortress, and shall take away the continual [burnt offering], and they shall set up the abomination that makes desolate.

A Precise Prophecy Fulfilled

Commentators overwhelmingly agree that this verse was fulfilled with stunning accuracy by the Syrian king Antiochus Epiphanes. Around 167 BC, his forces occupied Jerusalem, defiled the Temple ('the sanctuary of strength'), stopped the daily sacrifices, and erected an idol altar to Jupiter. This historical event, called the 'abomination that makes desolate' in the Book of Maccabees, demonstrates God's sovereign foreknowledge of events.
